Greener Nairobi Urban Forestry
Friends of Dago serves as a local/lead implementation partner in the Greener Nairobi Urban Forestry Project, working within a multi-organization coalition that includes IDEAS For Us, One Tree Planted, FedEx, VIO Society Kenya, schools, community organizations and public-sector stakeholders.

Current Project Status
- 11,228 contractual tree target
- 8,700 trees planted by the Year-One reporting cutoff of April 30, 2026
- 9,300 trees planted cumulatively as of September 2026
- 1,928 contractual trees remaining
- Approximately 1,200 replacement trees tracked separately to prevent double-counting
The September 2026 project presentation reports a working original-tree survival estimate of 87.4%, based on 7,600 living trees out of the 8,700 planted by the Year-One cutoff. This figure is subject to final site-level validation; the project benchmark was 85%.
How the Project Grew
The initial 2025 planting cohort documented 5,263 trees across seven Nairobi locations. Project reporting also documented 600+ volunteers, including 21 youth groups and 150 women, alongside environmental-learning activities reaching 270 learners through workshops and eco-clubs.

Why It Matters
Greener Nairobi expands Friends of Dago’s environmental implementation experience beyond rural food systems into urban forestry, riparian restoration, tree equity, climate resilience, environmental education, corporate volunteering and long-term community stewardship.
The project also demonstrates the Friends of Dago partnership standard in practice: roles are separated rather than collapsed into a generic partner list, delivery evidence is dated, replacement planting is not double-counted, and working survival figures remain clearly qualified until final validation.
Evidence status: Current implementation evidence through September 2026. Contractual closeout and final survival validation remain in progress.
